Our primary gimbal for the Panasonic GH4 is without a doubt the Zhiyun Weebill Lab. Zhiyun have dominated the mirrorless camera market place for about five to seven years now with different generations of their gimbal line up being the dominant gimbal stabilizer in the weight class. The Weebill Lab is an outstanding bit of kit and Zhiyun have done an excellent job of getting it onto the market at this price point with the level of performance and functionality that the gimbal is able to provide you.

Coming in at a close second is the Zhiyun Crane Plus that is actually from the previous generation of Zhiyun gimbals and has an excellent reputation within the community. Although the Weebill Lab is an overall better choice, we know that a small number of videographers and vloggers do not like the new design and prefer the traditional handheld gimbal setup making the Crane Plus the ideal choice for them.

Finally, coming in at third place is the DJI Ronin SC and in all honesty, we are only featuring the Ronin SC due to some videographers preferring to use the DJI option no matter what. In our opinion, at the time of writing at least, either of the Zhiyun options above would be a better addition to your Panasonic Lumix GH4 camera accessories. They are both around $100 cheaper while also being able to support a larger maximum load capacity while also providing you with almost identical levels of performance.

The Zhiyun Weebill Lab

Now, at the time of writing, the Zhiyun Weebill Lab has only been available on the market for a few months and it has quickly managed to earn an excellent reputation within the community due to its absolutely excellent levels of performance when you take into account its very small size, lightweight, and low price tag. This is also why we feel that it is the undisputed best gimbal for GH4 cameras on the market right now and we doubt anything will be able to knock it off the top spot any time soon.

The Weebill Lab is also the first gimbal from the Zhiyun range to feature their new compact travel gimbal design to ensure that the gimbal is as small and easy to travel with as possible while also ensuring you get the absolute best performance possible too. If you are involved in a videographer niche where you have to travel by air a while bunch or if you are a travel vlogger then the Weebill Lab is able to reduce both the size and weight of the videography gear that you have to take with you by a large amount.

Performance And Functionality

As we mentioned earlier, the performance of the Weebill Lab is outstanding and we have no doubt that it is the best mirrorless camera currently available on the market right now and the obvious choice for your Panasonic GH4. The gimbal is able to support a maximum load of 6.6 pounds and with the GH4 coming in at only 1.23 pounds, you have plenty of spare load capacity for any accessories that you want to mount on the gimbal too.

This ensures that you are able to mount some pretty heavy Panasonic GH4 setups on the gimbal and still have it provide you with the excellent levels of image stabilization that you would expect from a modern Zhiyun gimbal stabilizer. On top of this, you are also able to use long and heavy lenses while still ensuring that you get the best range of motion for your camera possible.

Moving onto battery life, the Weebill Lab can provide you with up to ten hours of battery life with each charge of its batteries. Unlike some gimbals that seem to have a much shorter battery life if you mount a heavy camera rig to it, the Weebill Lab is pretty solid and in all honesty, it does a solid job of ensuring you get as close to ten hours of battery life as possible no matter how heavy your GH4 setup is.

When the batteries of the gimbal do run dry, you can plug it in and recharge it in as little as only three hours. On top of this, we have seen a few videographers mentioned that they just take a high capacity power bank out with them if they know they will be away from a wall socket for a few days and use the power bank to top up their gimbal batteries as and when they can.

The YouTube video above is an excellent example of the level of image quality that you can expect when you mount your Panasonic GH4 to the Weebill Lab gimbal. The clips show how smooth your footage can be if you chose to pick up the 3 axis gimbal and it shows how efficient the gimbal is at providing you with its great image stabilization.

Additionally, the Weebill Lab has all of the latest technology from Zhiyun on it as standard including their new balancing algorithm as well as the latest gimbal motors. It also has their new vortex mode that you are able to use to get some pretty unique footage with the gimbal and your GH4. It also has all of the standard gimbal modes to ensure that you are able to quickly and easily get the most natural-looking image stabilization possible during use too.

User Interface And Control System

Now, the interface system for the Weebill Lab has been tweaked slightly when compared to what older generations of the Zhiyun gimbal range have previously used and we feel that they have made some solid changes. For example, if you are out in cold conditions and your hands, fingers, thumb get cold or wet, the joystick will still be as responsive as ever and accurately pick up the movements that you are telling it to make.

The system has also been specifically designed to be as easy as use as possible while also ensuring that when coupled with the Zhiyun smartphone app, the interface offers all of the advanced customization and functionality that a professional level videographer would require. This best of both worlds approach makes the Weebill Lab an excellent choice for videographers of all levels of experience.

Now, keep in mind that all of the Weebill Lab currently include the smartphone mount shown in the image above as standard unless you purchase the gimbal by itself without any accessories included with your purchase. If this is the case then the smartphone mount can be picked up here to help make it easier to get the smartphone functionality when using the gimbal.

The Smartphone App

Speaking of the smartphone mount, gone are the days when the Zhiyun smartphone app was neglected and essentially worthless. Over the last year or so, Zhiyun has released a bunch of updates to their app to ensure that it offers you some great functionality and is actually a valuable, free, gimbal accessory.

The new and improved intelligent object tracking system controlled via the app used on the Weebill Lab truly is excellent and gets the job done requiring minimal effort on your part. Additionally, if you have the smartphone mount, you can secure your smartphone right on the gimbal to make the whole process as smooth as possible.

Additionally, the app also ensures that you are able to tweak any settings on the gimbal that you may need to tweak quickly to ensure you are getting the best performance possible from it for your Panasonic GH4. Finally, the connectivity bugs that the app had previously suffered from have also been totally ironed out now making the easy to use and not a total nightmare.

Build Quality And Design

As we mentioned back at the start, the Weebill Lab has the brand new design and although we personally prefer it, the design of the gimbal was a point of controversy when it was initially released. That said, the majority of people who have used it seem to have come around to its new design with many of them seeing the benefits it provides and actually preferring it.

The design ensures that the gimbal is as small as possible and the materials used in its construction have been selected to ensure they are also lightweight to make the perfect travel gimbal. That said, the gimbal is also pretty touch and robust too while also being very quick and easy to balance too. All in all, Zhiyun get a thumbs up from us when it comes to the build quality and design of the Weebill Lab.

Our Verdict

You can probably tell that we are massive fans of the Weebill Lab but from the look of it, so are the majority of the independent videographers who have used it. The gimbal has a ton of third party reviews that you can read if you like to get an external opinion on it and see how the wider videography community feel about it.

Although we would choose the Weebill Lab as our primary recommendation even if it did have a higher price tag, we feel that its current price point is cost-efficient also making it the best budget-friendly gimbal for GH4 cameras too. It can easily help to improve the image quality your GH4 is able to capture and will make a great addition to your Panasonics camera accessories.

The Zhiyun Crane Plus

Next up, we have the Zhiyun Crane Plus that is a very close second behind its slightly newer brother the Zhiyun Weebill Lab covered above. We wanted to feature the Crane Plus as it offers the majority of the technology that you can get out of the Weebill Lab but it has that standard design that some people prefer.

In addition to that, it is the previous go to gimbal of choice for the mirrorless camera gimbal weight class and is still a great bit of kit that will perform well for your Panasonic GH4. It offers some great performance as well as one of the best maximum battery lives of all gimbals on the market right now. This coupled with its low price tag ensured that the Crane Plus was able to gain an excellent reputation within the videography community quickly after its release. Even though the Weebill Lab is on the market now, the Crane Plus is still popular with its user base continuing to grow at a steady pace.

Performance And Functionality

Although your Panasonic Lumix GH4 is pretty heavy for a mirrorless camera, the Crane Plus can support up to 5.5 pounds of load capacity and this should be plenty for the majority of popular GH4 rigs on the market right now and help ensure that you are able to mount all of the accessories to the camera that you want to.

As we mentioned, the Crane Plus has the best maximum battery life potential of all handheld gimbal stabilizers on the market right now offering you up to eighteen hours of battery with each charge! This should easily be enough for the majority of our readers as it is rare that someone will be able to use eighteen hours of battery life without having a chance to recharge.

Again, some people choose to take a power bank with them to top their device up while they are on the go and away from a regular power outlet. That said though, if you are able to plug into mains power, you are able to recharge the gimbal in as little as three hours helping you get back out and capture more footage without having to waste time while your gimbal charges.

Although it was pretty close as there are a fair few great cinematic videos online that have been recorded using the Zhiyun Crane Plus for image stabilization, we feel the one embedded above is definatley our favorite. It effortlessly showcases exactly what the 3 axis gimbal is able to provide for your Lumix GH4 and offers plenty of inspiration on how you will be able to use it to help improve your image photography.

As we mentioned earlier, the Crane Plus also comes with the majority of the same technology as the Weebill Lab offering the most up to date Zhiyun point of view mode, night lapse mode, motion memory, and intelligent object tracking too. Implementing the use of these various gimbal modes can help to improve the image quality that you are able to capture when using the gimbal and they go a great job of providing you with natural-looking image stabilization.

User Interface And Control System

If you are brand new to gimbals and have never used one before then the Crane Plus has one of the easiest to use interface systems that you will be able to find. We have no doubt that if this is your very first gimbal, you will be able to easily get it balanced and be out of the door capturing your video footage in no time at all.

Just like with the Weebill Lab, you can also use the system as well as the smartphone app to customize the gimbal to get exactly what you need out of it for any advanced settings. This ensures that both entry-level and professional level vloggers or videographers can get exactly what they need out of the gimbal with minimal effort on either’s part.

The Smartphone App

Both the Crane Plus and the Weebill Lab use the same Zhiyun smartphone app so there’s not much else to say for this section as we have covered the app in the section above for the Weebill Lab. Considering it’s free, it is well worth downloading, even if it’s just to get the wireless remote control functionality out of it.

Build Quality And Design

The design of the Crane Plus is essentially based on an upgraded Zhiyun Crane v2 with a small number of slight tweaks to ensure that you are getting the best possible performance from the gimbal for your GH4. The build quality of the Crane Plus is solid and it can easily be put in your videography gear bag during transit and be bumped around a little without issue.

Keep in mind that the Crane Plus is more than double the weight of the Zhiyun Weebill Lab as it was not specifically designed as a travel gimbal so if you do plan to travel a whole bunch, the smaller size and weight of the Weebill Lab is probably the better choice.

Our Verdict

We love the Zhiyun Crane Plus and it is easy to see why it was previously the king of mirrorless camera gimbals until the Weebill Lab took its title. Even now though, we would say that the Crane Plus is a close second for your GH4, especially when you factor in its excellent battery life. It still has a steadily growing customer base too and many people who use the Crane Plus have posted their own independent reviews for it.

The DJI Ronin SC

The final gimbal for GH4 cameras that we are featuring is the DJI Ronin SC and if you prefer to use a DJI gimbal as some videographers so, this is probably the gimbal for you. That said, if you do use a super heavy Panasonic GH4 setup then the big brother to the Ronin SC, the DJI Ronin S is probably the way to go as it has a much larger load capacity.

Now, that said, if you don’t care about the brand of the gimbal that you use we would highly recommend that you go with either the Zhiyun Weebill Lab or the Zhiyun Crane Plus over the Ronin SC. The DJI is about $100 more while having a lower load capacity and less battery life than the Crane Plus. That said, the Ronin SC is a solid option and has a .

Performance And Functionality

The Ronin SC also has the lowest load capacity of the three featured gimbals and can only support around 4.4 pounds of payload weight. Although this should be enough for most Panasonic Lumix GH4 camera setups right now, it may struggle with any super heavy rigs, especially if you like to use camera cages or battery grips with your GH4 when recording.

The SC can also provide up to eleven hours of battery life from a full charge and the gimbal does a pretty solid job of ensuring that you are able to get eleven hours of battery life each time no matter how high your payload weight is. The Ronin SC can be charged back to full in only two and a half hours too making it the fasted charging gimbal on our list.

The short cinematic video recorded using the DJI Ronin SC above shows you some solid examples of the level of image stabilization the gimbal can provide your GH4. The gimbal is very responsive to rapid movements and corrects lightning fast to ensure that you are getting some of the quickest stabilization from the gimbal head possible.

User Interface And Control System

The SC uses a very similar control interface to the Crane Plus making it very easy to pick up and learn with minimal time investment required on your part. The whole system is based around you being able to focus the majority of your hand grip on supporting the weight of your Panasonic Lumix GH4 and gimbal while you can get the most out of the control system using just your thumb.

The Smartphone App

DJI really are in a league of their own when it comes to gimbal based smartphone apps and they have lead the pack for as long as we can remember. The DJI team seem to view their smartphone app as an extension to their gimbals rather than just an optional gimbal accessory. The app is quick and easy to set up and pair with your gimbal, its navigation menu is also clean as easy to navigate too making it simple to use while offering a large amount of functionality.

Build Quality And Design

Being the DJI mirrorless camera wight class flagship gimbal, they have gone all out when it comes to the build quality of the gimbal and the Ronin SC is smart, functional, lightweight, and tough. It offers pretty much everything that you could ever want out of the design and build quality of a gimbal to ensure that you get the absolute best performance possible out of it with minimal effort required on your part.

Our Verdict

The DJI Ronin SC is a great bit of kit but just as we said back at the start of this section, we just don’t feel that it is worth the money when you can add the Zhiyun Weebill Lab to your Panasonic Lumix GH4 camera accessories for almost $100 less, get the same performance, while also getting a higher maximum load capacity.
