The Best Gimbal For Canon 90D Cameras!

So, the Canon 90d is the latest new release from the Canon range and we decided to get out ahead of the questions that are inevitably coming about what we feel is the best gimbal for Canon 90d cameras. The Canon 80d was an excellent camera that was very popular and in all honesty, we are expecting more of the same from the new 90d and initial impressions from the community seem to suggest that it is going to have a user base just as big if not bigger than what the 80d managed to grow.

Now, although the Canon 90d is a DSLR camera, it is a the lighter end of the scale while on top of this, it is an entry-level DSLR that offers some excellent performance with an entry-level price tag attached to it. Due to this, we are actually going to recommend the Zhiyun Weebill Lab as the best handheld gimbal stabilizer for Canon 90d cameras over the DJI Ronin S due to the Weebill Lab following a very similar philosophy.

In our opinion, when it comes to sheer performance, the DJI Ronin S is without a doubt the undisputed king of DSLR gimbals but it is over twice the price of the Weebill Lab at the time of writing. On top of this, due to the Canon 90d being such a lightweight DSLR, there really is no need for the massive load capacity of the Ronin S. The Weebill Lab offers performance that is almost as good and has been designed for use with mirrorless and lightweight DSLR cameras and has an entry-level price tag too.

If you have the budget available and know that sometime in the future you will upgrade from your Canon 90d to a mid-range or professional level DSLR then sure, seriously consider the DJI Ronin S as your gimbal of choice to future proof yourself. That said though, if you know that you are just going to be sticking with your Canon 90d for vlogging or some light videography work then we would highly recommend that you seriously consider the Zhiyun Weebill Lab.

Since its release onto the market a few months back, the Weebill Lab has managed to quickly establish itself as the dominant mirrorless camera gimbal and in reality, probably second only to the Ronin S in the lightweight DSLR camera space too. It is not surprising that it has managed to quickly earn the excellent reputation that it enjoys amongst the community so we will be featuring the Weebill Lab as our primary recommendation for the rest of the article.

Performance And Functionality

Now, as we mentioned, the Canon 90d comes in at only 1.32 pounds meaning that the 6.6-pound maximum load capacity of the Weebill Lab can support the vast majority of possible setups for the 90d. Even if you mount a number of heavy camera accessories to it, we are confident in saying that the Weebill Lab will likely be able to support your setup and provide you with the image stabilization that you are looking for.

That said though if you know for a fact that you will be working in a specialist videography niche with some heavy camera accessories then the DJI Ronin S maybe the better gimbal. The easiest way to know is to work out the total payload weight of your whole Canon 90d setup including all camera accessories. We would imagine that the vast majority of setups will be under the 6.6 pounds that the Weebill Lab can support, anything over that is the domain of the Ronin S.

The Weebill Lab also supports a respectable ten-hour maximum battery life that should be plenty for the majority of our readers to capture all the video footage they need between charging opportunities. Once the gimbal does run out of battery, it can be recharged back to full in around three hours via a regular wall power outlet.

In addition to this, many vloggers and videographers carry a high power USB power bank with them to top up both their gimbal and camera as well as any other electronic devices like smartphones while out and about. A high power bank allows you to extend the battery life of your gear to meet pretty much any needs you may have. If you are a travel vlogger then this could be another great camera accessory to invest in as it ensures you can recharge your gear even when you are away from power supplies.

All of the clips in the cinematic video shown above have been recorded using the Zhiyun Weebill Lab and show the excellent levels of image stabilization that this great gimbal is able to provide for your Canon 90D. Now, the clips were actually recorded using the Canon M50 rather than the Canon 90D but with the 90D being such a light DSLR, we feel that it is an accurate representation of what you can expect.

On top of this, the Weebill Lab is one of the newest handheld gimbal stabilizers available from the Zhiyun range and come with their latest balancing algorithm and gimbal motors. These Zhiyun gimbal motors are second to none and in our opinion, the DJI motors are the closest to them out of the competing options on the market right now. In our opinion, when it comes to the actual balancing algorithm, both DJI and Zhiyun have excellent technology that has advantages over each other in different areas but both are leaps ahead of the competition.

Essentially, the balancing algorithm detects even the slightest movement and then works out how best to correct it before having the powerful gimbal motors on the Weebill Lab react to the movement and keep your camera stable. This results in some very smooth and rapid image stabilization that can help improve the image quality of the video footage that you can capture with your Canon 90d.

The gimbal also has a bunch of popular gimbal modes included to help you efficiently use the gimbal in a number of situations. The point of view mode on the Weebill Lab is particularly good and allows you to capture natural-looking video footage that is stabilized and previously restricted to manual stabilizers until the last few years when motorized gimbals had the technology added.

In our opinion, Zhiyun really has done an outstanding job with their new range of gimbals and it is not surprising that the Weebill Lab has quickly become one of the dominant stabilizers in the space. Additionally, in the short time since its release onto the market, it has earned a number of glowing independent reviews from vloggers and videographers who use it as their go-to gimbal of choice.

User Interface And Control System

Now, one of our favorite things about the Weebill Lab is the fact that its control interface system is absolutely excellent and is probably one of the best on any modern gimbal stabilizer that we have seen. As you can see in the image above, it is based around the standard of an LCD Panel, a joystick, and a few buttons with the optional smartphone mount shown above.

This is pretty standard and in reality, there is nothing special about the actual physical interface, the magic is in its simplicity and its customization options. This allows the Weebill Lab to be an excellent option for a number of different user groups with the exact same control interface. For example, a first-time gimbal owner can take advantage of the simplicity of the system whereas an advanced gimbal user is able to take advantage of the customization options.

The system is also very responsive and easy to navigate too. If you are brand new to gimbals, you will easily find your way around the control system on the Weebill Lab to help you get the most out of it for your Canon 90d. Another great thing is that the joystick and buttons are also responsive even if your hands are cold or wet while the LCD panel is excellent for low light use too.

Smartphone App

Now, the Zhiyun Weebill Lab supports Zhiyun intelligent object image tracking system that needs the Zhiyun smartphone app to work efficiently. Thankfully, due to this, Zhiyun overhauled their app prior to the release of the Weebill Lab and their other gimbals that support this system to correct the issues that it previously had. The initial syncing issues that the app previously had are all gone now, the issue with random disconnects once synced up has also been fixed and the app has also received a general facelift to make it easier to use.

Considering that the smartphone app is free we would highly recommend that our readers download it anyway even if they don’t plan to use the intelligent object tracking system anyway. This is due to the wireless remote control functionality of the app as well as the quick and easy access to your gimbal settings for any tweaks that you may want to make during use.

Balancing

The balancing system on the Weebill Lab is the latest system from Zhiyun and is extremely easy to do ensure that you are able to quickly and easily balance your Canon 90d on your gimbal without having to waste time. On top of this, the user manual that comes with the gimbal is very easy to follow and gives a great explanation of how to balance the gimbal, on top of this, there are a bunch of tutorial videos on YouTube too if you do run into any problems.

Many people new to using gimbal worry about the balancing systems due to the bad press they got a few years back when some gimbals were a total nightmare. Thankfully, brands like Zhiyun and DJI have always tried to make sure that their system is as quick and easy to go through as possible while also being very user-friendly too.

Build Quality And Design

The build quality of the Weebill Lab is absolutely outstanding and if you are using your Canon 90D for any kind of travel based work it is an excellent option. Zhiyun has outdone themselves in our opinion and the gimbal is extremely small and lightweight compared to all competing gimbals, especially when you factor in its large maximum load capacity too. This allows you to easily store the Weebill Lab in your luggage without taking up too much space or adding too much weight so you go over your baggage allowance for air travel too.

Another great thing is that even though the gimbal is light, it is made from the latest polymers to ensure that it is as tough and robust as possible too. This means that you have the peace of mind that while in transit, your gimbal is safe and able to take a fair few knocks without issue. Considering the price tags of these stabilizers it is nice to know that it won’t just break at the first bump it has.

When it comes to design, Zhiyun have also managed to be one of the first to innovate the standard handheld gimbal design in years. As shown in the image above, you can now quickly and easily detach the main handle of the gimbal and mount it to the top to use the gimbal in underslung mode. This provides you with the functionality to capture some great low angle footage with your Canon 90d without having to purchase other gimbal accessories after your initial gimbal purchase that takes up additional size and weight.

The final thing that we want to comment on with regards to the build quality of the gimbal is the handle. So many people overlook the importance of the handle of a gimbal but in our opinion, it is a very important part of the puzzle as you could potentially be holding it for hours at a time. Thankfully, Zhiyun has taken a bunch of feedback on board and made the handle on the Weebill Lab as comfortable as possible so your hand won’t cramp during extended sessions.

Our Verdict

That concludes our article on the best gimbal for Canon 90d cameras and we really do think that the Weebill Lab is the way to go. If you know for a fact that your total camera payload will be outside of the scope of the Weebill Lab as we mentioned earlier in the article then the DJI Ronin S is the optimal gimbal but for everyone else, the Weebill Lab is the better option.

Additionally, there are also a number of third-party reviews of the gimbal online that you can read if you wish that offer some great insights into its performance. Even just taking a couple of minutes to skim some of those reviews can offer you an excellent insight into their performance as well as how the wider videography community feel about the Weebill Lab.
